User Experience (UX) is critical to the success or failure of a product in the market. But what does UX Design actually mean? User Experience design combines user research, design thinking and problem solving to create applications, websites and products people loves. Becoming a UX Designer you must have an aptitude for learning and good communicators. UX designers also need to be a critical thinkers. They must think in the past, present and the future. — Go Work.

Today, I would like to share my talk about UX in that event.

User eXperience?

  • Satisfaction
  • Usability
  • Accessibility
  • Pleasure

Provided in the interaction with the product.

Good UX Designer

Basically, to become a good UX, there are 3 skill you have to conquer :

Good communicators

Collaborate, Convince, Share & Explain

Critical thinkers

Assumptions. Belief, ( Conceptualizing, applying, observation, reasoning )

Think in the past, present and the future

As growing knowledge and understanding of the past relates to the present & future day. ( Assumptions -> Products -> Analytics -> Improvement ) Ex : Transportation

Job of UX Designer

It’s not as complicated as you think, our job is easy but you have to be thorough in order to understand user’s problems and made a useful product.

I would like to elaborate more about the user persona & user journey maps, base on expert :

User Persona

A user persona is a fictional representation of your ideal customer. A persona is generally based on user research and incorporates the needs, goals, and observed behaviour patterns of your target audience. -Google

User Journey Maps

A user journey is a timeline of user actions that describes the relationship between your brand and its customers. It’s a visualisation all of a user’s interactions with your product, from their point of view.

User journey mapping creates a timeline of all touch points between a customer and your organisation, including all channels they happen in. -Geordie Kaytes

To make a user journey map, instead of diagram flow, i think wireflows from NNGroup more easy to understand. “Wireflows are a combination of wireframes and flowcharts. They can document workflow and screen designs when there are few pages that change dynamically. “ -Nielsen Norman Group

Measurement?

Once you finished your job, and wonder are you doing a good job or not, here is some question list base on basic UX.

Beauty

  • Is it aesthetically pleasant?
  • Does it follows the style guide? ( Attractive things work better )
  • Are high quality images and graphics used? (balance with size optimisation)
  • Is it properly aligned with the layout?

Accessibility

  • Can ‘everyone’ use it?
  • Does it comply to standards?
  • Is it cross-browser compatible?
  • Is it ‘display’ responsive?
  • Is the language simple enough for most to understand?

Simplycity

  • Does it make life easier?
  • Does it reduce the user’s workload?
  • Is it free of clutter and repetitive text?
  • Is its functionality necessary?

Intuitiveness

  • Is it easy to use?
  • Is the functionality clear ?
  • Can the user achieve their goal with little or no initial instructions?
  • Is the task easily repeated by the user without further instruction?
  • Can the user predict the outcome/output?

Consistency

  • Does it match the system?
  • Does it reuse existing interface or interaction ?
  • Is its language, images, and branding consistent with the system?
  • Does it appear in the right place at the right time?
  • Does it perform consistently every time?

Each principle then has a set of qualifying questions. If you can answer ‘yes’ to the questions, then you have satisfied that principle’s requirements in the framework.

What do you think? I’d love to hear your thoughts about that, feel free to reach out to me to chat or grab coffee if you’re in Jakarta.
